This is what we bring you on the day we launch this magazine. It is October 2015 and we are living through a challenging time for reporters. Over the past months we have seen newsmen attacked in Paris, Moscow, Cairo, Dhaka and elsewhere. Even in Britain, free speech has been curbed by bossy bodies at universities from Manchester to London, Oxford to Cardiff. It is more important now than ever for independent writers to have a publishing space at their university. That is what we are here for. As we witness the rise of technology and new media, the most significant structural shift in journalism since Gutenberg invented the printing press is already well underway and the future of the activity itself is foggier than ever. But we do not think that means that journalistic values should change. There will always be people willing to chase the stories and argue the ideas that someone somewhere doesn’t want to see printed. People like us. From The Manchester Magazine, you can expect informative writing, impartial reporting and independent analysis. You can also hope for some nonsense and banter now and then, glamourous fashion photography, captivating arts reviews and fanatic sports commentary.
